The Liberal National Party (PNL) was the winner of the latest European parliament election and is negotiating to form a new majority in the national parliament.
In a recent statement, the leader of the liberal party, Ludovic Orban, declared that the tax exemptions for the ICT sector are no longer relevant and should be introduce as a principle of fair taxation. This will affect over 100,000 employees in the Romanian sector, a sector that was ten times smaller according to a Romanian news outlet, recorder.ro.
Although the sector is very important, critics say it is not the most important as share in the national GDP and there is no indication that a fair labor taxation will significantly contract the sector.
Romania’s ICT sector is no different to other Eastern European countries that grew exponentially in the last years and not all the countries had tax subsidies.
It appears that the fair taxation principle is supported by many Romanians and might be happening in the following years.
